Unless they’re dedicated entomologists, this could be the perfect place to freak out your unsuspecting friends.
Does the sight of a bug, worm, or spider give you the chills? How freaked out would you be if you entered a room where all of those creatures were neatly gathered into one place?
It’s certainly not the bugs’ fault that they happen to cause so many people to go into hysterics, but if you’re one such human, then you’ll probably want to steer clear of this upcoming event in Nagoya.
If, on the other hand, you’re fascinated by all manner of creepy-crawlies, you’ll definitely want to check out the Kimoi-Kan (“Disgusting Things Exhibition”) that will hit Nagoya’s Parco department store gallery between April 8–May 15. Kimoi is a Japanese contraction of kimochi warui [“unpleasant;” “disgusting”], and just as its name suggests, the collection will feature a number of “gross” creatures from around the world, ranging from insects to lizards and slimy frogs, all of which you’d love to slip into your annoying sibling’s bed!
▼ (Though this writer happens to think that Budgett’s frogs are actually kinda cute.)
The exhibition is being sponsored by Television Aichi Broadcasting (TV Aichi) in cooperation with the folks at Tokuyama Zoo in Shunan City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. The zoo hosted similar events in 2013 and 2014 under the subtitle “A Test of Courage,” and last year’s event featured your friendly neighborhood cockroaches, drawing approximately 10,000 people to the zoo. Similarly, Nagoya’s Parco hosted an event last summer to spotlight some extremely poisonous animals from around the world.
Shoppers should note that there will be plenty of goods to buy at the venue, as well as a temporary Kimoi Kitchen pop-up eatery from 4/29-5/8 on the first floor of Parco which will serve, among other things, grasshopper soft serve ice cream, similar to the one seen below:
