Nostalgic Japanese candy meets fragrant incense for a scent-sational retro treat that won’t rot your teeth or split your pants, but might burn a hole in your rug…
During childhood, many of us suffered from the kind of sweet tooth that would have us hoarding candy like contraband goods, waiting for the day when we could become independent adults and eat sweets all day long. Of course, life didn’t really work out that way in the end (unless you’ve got some kind of diabetic death-wish and a total lack of fear of the dentist’s drill), so we have to pace ourselves.
But the nostalgic fondness for certain kinds of sweet treats can linger on, and this new product seeks to cash in on that by turning Japanese childhood favourite Sakuma Drops candies into fragrant incense sticks.

The sticks, which are scented to evoke memories of the taste of the candies themselves, and are absolutely not under any circumstances meant to be tasted, come in Strawberry, Apple, Orange and Melon scents and are presented in cute packaging that’s meant to imitate the look of a box of the colourful drops.

Each incense stick will reportedly burn for 19 minutes, and at only 600 yen (US$5.20) per box, we reckon burning a few of these candy sticks will be a cost-effective and sugar-free way to beat those sweet cravings. Unless, of course, you’re the highly suggestible type, in which case a few whiffs of the sweet smoke might send you dashing to the local conbini in search of an actual box of the real thing…
