Feeling a little peckish? This might be just what you need.
As a nation that’s always looking for the next food sensation, Japan tends to get all aflutter whenever anyone discovers a compelling new snack. So earlier this week plenty of people took notice when thousands of Japanese twitter users were declaring a certain item from convenience store Lawson to be the next big thing.
Eager to put it in our mouths, we rushed across the street to the Lawson that’s just steps away from RocketNews24 headquarters, where we procured a 140-yen (US$1.30) individually packaged smoked sasami.
Drawing the package close to our face, we took a sniff and noticed that despite being sealed in plastic, there was still the faint scent of smoked meat. We tore open the package (for some reason we felt like we should do it gently), and the smoky aroma became even stronger as we exposed the newest member of our group of taste test subjects.
At full extension, the smoky aroma was even more enticing, but before biting into the sasami, we paused to take a long, hard look at it.
Like we said, Lawson’s smoked sasami has been getting plenty of attention online, primarily for its appearance. It was a little hard to tell while it was still in the wrapper, but now that it was unsheathed, it did indeed look like a sasami.
Unable to fight our hunger any longer, we wrapped our lips around the sasami and bit into it. It was as juicy and flavorful as we’d hoped it would be.
Somehow, though, we were startled at how tender it was. Judging from its appearance, we’d been bracing ourselves for the snack to be at least firm, if not rock-hard. Still, we have to say we were happy about the soft texture and mouth feel. After all, this is sasami, or what the lean chicken tender portion of a chicken breast is called in Japanese.
So relax, while Lawson’s smoked sasami may look like a cock, it’s actually hen, and specifically a hen’s boob.
You can follow Casey on Twitter, but be advised that he just blew his entire load of dick jokes.
