Augmented reality gets a taste of realism thanks to Pokémon fans in Nagoya.
As the original line-up of Pokémon virtually invade our real world thanks to AR game Pokémon GO, some fans are also hoping to bring a bit of “Pewter City” to life. Gyms in Pokémon GO usually inhabit some major landmarks that were user-submitted thanks to Niantic’s previous game Ingress. This has resulted in a lot of major locations in the world being labeled as Pokémon Gyms in the game. Nagoya University found a gym on campus and some dedicated fans decided to give it a bit of a makeover with some décor that wouldn’t look out of place at the Opelucid Gym.

Long-time Pokémon players will recognize the setup here as two “traditional” statues and accompanying plaques have been erected to mark the area as a Pokémon Gym. Players can feel a sense of nostalgia as they check the plaques for tips or hints about the gym they are about to battle at. The statues don’t look like any particular ‘mon but they do look to be 3-D printed specifically for this purpose.

We hope that there are some other Pokémon fans out there with access to a 3-D printer who are willing to put these up for other gyms. Not only will it be a fun way to mark off an area for Pokémon GO battles, but if enough of them go up, it could be the beginning of a Poké-art movement!
