Plans to bust out full costume in the near future, hopefully won’t bust too many fans’ brains.

They say if you wait around long enough, everything comes back into fashion, and that’s certainly applicable in the case of manga creator Go Nagai. Currently celebrating the 50th anniversary of his major manga debut, a number of landmark Nagai franchises are being remade with brand-new anime projects, including 2017’s Mazinger Z: Infinity and January’s Devilman Crybaby, one of the most talked-about series in recent memory.

But while Nagai’s ‘60s/early ‘70s esthetics and atmosphere were out of fashion for some time, one thing that never sees drooping popularity is breasts, and that mix of factors, with rejuvenated and evergreen popularity, is on display in a bit of cosplay by Japanese celebrity and media personality Mika Kano, one half of the famously buxom Kano Sisters, who this week shared a creatively cropped snapshot of herself dressed as Nagai’s most famous heroine: Cutie Honey.

Originally a 1968 manga, Cutie Honey has been adapted into a number of animated projects and returns to the world of anime this April with Cutie Honey Universe, a new series set to streaming on Netflix as part of the company’s major push into anime distribution, and Kano will be cosplaying as the titular Honey Kisaragi at this month’s Anime Japan convention to promote the series.

Some may criticize the cropping of Kano’s extreme closeup as lasciviously pandering, but it’s worth noting that among Honey’s powers are the ability to transform her appearance at will, with a prodigious chest being one of the few constant elements. As such, one could argue that the preview Kano has supplied is the true visual core of the character.

Online reactions to Kano’s Cutie Honey cosplay teaser have included:

“She could play Cutie Honey in a live-action version.”
“Fabulous.”
“So sexy it’s iyasareru.”
“I want to see the rest of the costume!”
“Now I’m wishing she’d cosplay as one of the One Piece characters.”

While it looks like we won’t be seeing Kano’s full Cutie Honey outfit until Anime Japan, she actually has dressed up as one of One Piece’s busty pirate beauties already, so at least fans can look over those again while they wait for her newest anime cosplay.
