Our writer Tasuku Egawa risks his pants to determine if “as seen on TV” is “as seen in reality.”
We’ve all seen those infomercials that make bold claims for their products such as the cleaner that can remove any stain with one wipe, or tape that can adhere a hippo to a ceiling. For Tasuku Egawa, the one that always made him scoff was the cushion that allowed people to sit on a raw egg without breaking it.
It was a convenient claim, because who’s really going to sit on an egg just to check its veracity?
Tasuku, that’s who.
After browsing Amazon, he found the extremely long-named Kakkoi Zero Gravity Cushion Super Aeration Gel Cushion Cool Health Cushion Posture Correction Backache Sciatica Hemorrhoid Prevention Dry for Office Wheeled Chair Perfect for Summer, and bought one for 2,380 yen (US$22).
There was no particular reason for choosing the Kakkoi Zero Gravity Cushion Super Aeration Gel Cushion Cool Health Cushion Posture Correction Backache Sciatica Hemorrhoid Prevention Dry for Office Wheeled Chair Perfect for Summer, other than the fact that it was the first cushion Tasuku came across which showed someone sitting on an egg with it.
There were probably many other cushions that made similar claims, but he figured one would be as good as another. They were all probably lying anyway. It’s one of those lies that we as a society have just become desensitized to and let slide.
Tasuku was tired of this charade, however, and was fully prepared to take Big Cushion to task and end this cycle of deception once and for all.
When the Kakkoi Zero Gravity Cushion Super Aeration Gel Cushion Cool Health Cushion Posture Correction Backache Sciatica Hemorrhoid Prevention Dry for Office Wheeled Chair Perfect for Summer arrived, Tasuku was surprised to see that it had a black cover. It was nice, but made it look completely different from the pictures.
However, inside were those familiar blue hexagons. Tasuku decided to try it out on his office chair and found that it was indeed comfortable, dry, and rather cool. He didn’t have backaches, sciatica, or hemorrhoids, but it was good to know those would have been covered too.
But that was all neither here nor there. It was time to really see what the Kakkoi Zero Gravity Cushion Super Aeration Gel Cushion Cool Health Cushion Posture Correction Backache Sciatica Hemorrhoid Prevention Dry for Office Wheeled Chair Perfect for Summer could do.
Showing it no mercy, he took his experiment to a nearby park and found a nice rock-hard concrete bench to use. He decided not to use the cover since that was its condition in the Amazon demonstration.
He also bought some fresh, raw eggs from a local supermarket.
Since Tasuku would be doing this in a public park, he didn’t want to make a mess of raw egg which could attract ladybugs and salamanders. So, he also picked up some plastic bags to contain the mess that was about to ensue. Of course he also made sure there was no air in the bag that might give extra cushioning.
He felt a little guilty about wasting food, but as the old saying goes: If you want to make an omelet, you have to be prepared to loose a little of the non-stick coating of your frying pan in the process.
With the stage set, it was time to sit…

The egg did not break. Were those ridiculous ads telling the truth this whole time?!
Perhaps, but Tasuku was not through yet. His first attempt was a rather delicate sit, giving the egg ample opportunity not to break. Next, he would attempt a completely natural sit, allowing the full force of his butt to meet with the egg.

Nothing… There wasn’t even a scratch.
It was all starting to make Tasuku question reality as he knew it. If he had been wrong about these cushions all this time, what else is he wrong about?
Each time he – much like you the reader might have – assumed he had an unusually hard egg or somehow got slipped a hard boiled egg by mistake. However, after each test he could easily crack it on the bench or in his hand.
Partly out of the anger of his disillusionment, and partly in order to push the Kakkoi Zero Gravity Cushion Super Aeration Gel Cushion Cool Health Cushion Posture Correction Backache Sciatica Hemorrhoid Prevention Dry for Office Wheeled Chair Perfect for Summer to its limits, Tasuku began hitting an egg with his first on the cushion.

And nothing…
Maybe this one was an unusually hard egg? Just to be sure, he wailed on it some more before finally cracking it open on the concrete with almost no effort.

So in conclusion, that’s a pretty good cushion. Tasuku held on to the possibility that someone with an exceptionally muscular butt might be able to break the egg, but for all intents and purposes the cushion offers perfect egg protection from average human butts and fists.
The real question now is why no one is adopting this technology for actual egg containers?
