To show the world that young people do not have a monopoly on dancing, a choreography group from Japan has put together a video showing an elderly Japanese woman busting some mean moves on a trendy street in Tokyo. Made in honor of “Respect for the Aged Day,” it shows a kimono-clad woman getting down with her bad self to fast-paced electronic music.
Based in Tokyo, Hidali is a creative group that formed earlier this year and has put out several eye-catching dance videos. But instead of multiple dancers, “Respect for the Aged Day” just shows one woman popping and locking on Tokyo’s fashionable Omotesando district.
With more than 20 percent of the population now over 65, Japan’s aging population may be viewed a problem by some who worry about the sustainable of social programs. But Hidali wants Japan to see the value of its elderly citizens.
At the end of her dancing routine, text pops on the screen that says “Are you respecting them? Don’t undervalue them.” Then a message from Hidali, in honor of the Japanese public holiday, reads “We think a country with amazing seniors makes for an amazing country.”
Take a look at the video below and let us know what you think of this dancing grandma! Can you break it down like she can?
