I’ve played my share of weird and psychedelic video games over the years. I’ve flown through space firing beams of energy to create musical beats while every colour of the rainbow zips by my face, played games that have sporadically erased the contents of my inventory to make me think I was losing my mind, and intentionally touched more fuzzies to get dizzier than most would ever dare.
But One Way Trip, an indie game coming to PlayStation 4 and Vita next year, looks like it’ll be one of the craziest rides I’ll ever have the pleasure of taking without giving the police cause to visit my home.
Revealed earlier today via PlayStation Blog, One Way Trip is currently being developed by Michael Frauenhofer, the man behind equally peculiar video game outing Demon Chic, and is due to arrive on Sony’s new home console and shiny portable sometime in 2015.
The game looks positively insane, but the developer’s description reveals that there’s a lot more to it than just trying to be wacky:
“In One Way Trip, you and your brother Barry discover that you’ve been poisoned in a mass attack on the water supply that has left a large portion of the nation with only six hours left to live, during which time they will be constantly hallucinating. To put it another way, it’s an atmospheric exploration of what it would be like to find out you and most everyone you love is about to die, and then have to process that while your limbs turn into cartoon dolphins.
But beyond that, One Way Trip is about mortality and opportunity cost. You probably won’t be able to accomplish all of your goals, but you’ll have the freedom to choose what your life is about, and what you decide is important to you.”
Oh, ok, so it’s just your run-of-the-mill ‘the-world-is-ending-and-you’re-tripping-out-while-it-happens-and-have-to-make-life-altering-decisions’ kind of game then??
Here’s the official reveal trailer, which also boasts a suitably weird soundtrack, so be sure to turn your speakers up.
Hopefully we’ll be seeing a lot more of One Way Trip at the upcoming E3 trade show. We certainly can’t wait to get our brains scrambled by it.
