Sometimes you just have to take a survey for the sake of taking a survey, no matter how seemingly random or inconsequential the contents of the survey may be.
For example, we now have the results of this survey, which we’re pretty sure no one asked for, that gauges which feudal warlord Japanese geeks would rather be working under. We presume this means in an office setting and not, like, on an old-timey Japanese Warring States-era battlefield.
- Date Masamune
Probably based on sheer name value alone, Date Masamune took the top spot with 40 votes in the Anime Otaku survey conducted by dip – a recruiting agency. Masamune may have had a leg up given that Ken Watanabe – essentially one of the coolest Japanese guys alive – played him in a late 80s Japanese period drama.
Masamune was an ambitious Daimyo of the feudal era, suggesting many of those responding to the survey may have chosen him because of his reckless aggressiveness – which surely would have paid off in today’s post-Steve Jobs startup culture business world.
- Oda Nobunaga
Oda Nobunaga came in second place with 39 votes. Nobunaga’s name is widely known both within and outside of Japan and he’s largely credited with unifying the country at the tail-end of the Warring Nations period – which obviously indicates a fairly high level of diplomatic ability. Nobunaga is also known for his, at the time, fairly eccentric behavior; he apparently tended to hang out with young folks, encouraging them to disregard his status. In the highly hierarchical society of Japan, it’s easy to see why some young otaku might see this as a charming trait. He also had a wicked mustache. This being Movember and all, that may have played a role in his high ranking in the survey.
- Uesugi Kenshin
Finally, rounding out the top three is Uesugi Kenshin, probably the least well-known of the three outside of Japan. Kenshin was one of the most powerful warlords of the era and a sort of keeper of the peace in the Kanto region. He is a playable character in Pokémon Conquest (ie, Pokémon x Nobunaga’s Ambition) which might have also swayed the otaku audience of the survey.
Why anyone would want a feudal warlord – who all were almost certainly sociopaths at best – is anyone’s guess, but there you have it. We wouldn’t even want a US president as a boss, let alone someone who forcibly wrested control from the masses through sheer violence, but hey…
