If you’ve ever wanted to be a kabuki actor, now you can train like a professional thanks to Kabuki Taro!
Of Japan’s performing arts, kabuki might be the most well-known internationally. From the acting to the writing to the amazing costumes, there’s no doubting just how distinct the artform is. But if you’ve ever thought about becoming a kabuki actor, you probably didn’t get very far — it’s not exactly an easy career path! However, one kabuki actor has created a school that anyone can join and, after six months of weekly training, take the stage for a proper performance. Of course, in this case, the performers will be your fellow students, but even if none of you are professionals, at least you’ll all look stunning!
In addition to six months of training, the performance will see students donning custom-made wigs, actual kabuki costumes, and the beautiful makeup kabuki actors are known for.
▼ You’ll be able to choose whatever role you want to play…
▼ …but you’ll also be paying based on the role you select.
Of course, we suppose anyone could just offer six months of weekly lessons, but potential students can rest easy knowing they’ll be instructed by Shijurou Tachibana, a kabuki actor with extensive teaching experience.
Everything from the lessons to the cost for the costumes (and wigs) is included in packages offered through Kabuki Taro. Packages range from 100,000 yen (about US$923) to 1,300,000 yen (roughtly $12,000) with price varying depending on what role you’re looking to play. You’ll have to contact Kabuki Taro directly to find out how much exactly.
Training is set to start in July and run until February 2017, when the actual performance is to be held. There are two different plays potential students can sign up for — Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami and Aoto Zōshi Hana no Nishiki-e. Practices for the former will be on Fridays and Saturdays for the latter.
Obviously, you’ll need to be both dedicated and fairly fluent in Japanese if you want to participate. There are no restictrions based on age, gender, or acting experience, so if you have the time and the money, this could be a great way to spend your weekends for six months! To learn more, head over to Kabuki Taro’s website.
And if more contemporary art is what you’re interested in, you might want to check out these videos featuring a veteran of the anime industry. Or you could do both — the videos are free, after all!
