So, there you have our interview with the star chef. And since it was the bakery’s first birthday, we thought we’d also share with you some pictures of the sights and tastes we’ve enjoyed at the shop over the past year.
▼ Yes, we remember the excitement and the crowd at the opening a year ago.
▼ Our very first Cronut® flavor: Hokkaido Milk Honey ganache with Yuzu Lemon Cream!
▼ The very first religieuse (double layered cream puffs) offered was the “Maneki-Neko” Religeuse in the shape of a traditional Japanese beckoning cat doll.
▼ There was also the Mr. Roboto bread, a variation of the Japanese “melon bread“.
▼ Of course, we had to try the Frozen S’more — vanilla ice cream covered with chocolate flakes encased in a large rectangular marshmallow that is torched with a burner right in front of you.
▼ And we can’t forget the Cookie Shot™, which is cold-infused vanilla milk served in a warm chocolate chip cookie baked in the shape of a shot glass.
▼ For Halloween, there was the Ghost Religeuse …
▼ … and also Mr. Roboto in a Jack-o’-lantern version.
▼ There was the turkey-shaped Gobble Me Up Caramel Bread for Thanksgiving.
▼ The Santa Religieuse appeared for Christmas.
▼ And in the new year, we had the George the Monkey Religeuse to celebrate the year of the monkey.
▼ We also went to the S’MORES POP-UP store in the beginning of the year to have their Ultimate S’more.
▼ In February, we had a Cronut® with a slightly Japanese twist: the Strawberry jam, Azuki white chocolate ganache and Kokutou sugar flavor …
▼ … followed by the Sakura Honey Almond, Salted Sugar and Salted Sakura Blossom flavor in March, just in time for cherry blossom season!
▼ There was also the adorable “Pika Pika Religieuse“, made in the image of a young child just starting kindergarten, coinciding with the new school year which starts in April.
▼ And we could never forget being absolutely charmed by this matcha latte topped with a bloominig marshmallow sakura flower!
▼ In May, we celebrated the third birthday of the Cronut® with a plate of “Cronut holes” in five selected flavors that were sold only in New York.
▼ The current religeuse pastry on offer is the Croak Croak Frog Religeuse, as Tokyo is in the middle of the rainy season now.
▼ And for the first anniversary celebration last week, the Tokyo shop was filled with gold and yellow balloons.
▼ A grand four-layered birthday cake was also displayed.
▼ Chef Dominique gives us a smile by the birthday cake after the interview.
So, it’s been quite a year for fans of the Dominique Ansel Bakery!
Once again, we’d like to say a huge thank you to Chef Dominique for taking time out of his busy schedule for the interview. And congratulations too, to the entire team at the Bakery for an amazing year. We look forward to more delectable and surprising Dominique Ansel creations in the years to come! Oh, and if you’re going to be anywhere near Omotesando this summer, you must try their soft serve ice cream (which should be available until early September) — the Caramel Sweet Corn flavor we had was simply to die for!!
