Just in time for summer, Dominique Ansel Bakery Japan is serving up their new What-a-Melon soft serve ice cream sandwiched inside an actual watermelon slice!
Yes, summer in Tokyo can be hot and sticky, and a cold treat is always welcome when the heat gets overwhelming. This year, the newest ice cream offering from Dominque Ansel Bakery Japan might be just the thing to keep cool during the coming hot months; not only is it cold and refreshing, it’s also a delight to look at!
Yup, that’s a real slice of watermelon with watermelon flavored ice cream sandwiched inside it. And the seeds you see aren’t actual watermelon seeds; they’re carefully designed pieces of chocolate shaped like seeds. Plus, the watermelon slice is served frozen to give it a pleasant texture and, of course, that extra chill to keep away the summer heat. The ice cream also comes with a side of sea salt, as it’s common in Japan to have watermelon with a sprinkle of salt.
The watermelon fruit and the red soft serve ice cream make for a stunning combination, and we couldn’t help but stare at it for a while.
▼ The swirls of soft serve ice cream look beautiful and utterly appetizing.
We plucked out one of the seeds, and sure enough, it was a piece of chocolate.
And here’s the sea salt that comes in a separate container. You can sprinkle it on the ice cream to your liking.
Okay, so we established that the visual presentation is impressive …
… now let’s see how it tastes!
The frozen watermelon was delightful to bite into and had a pleasant sweetness of its own, as they’ve made sure to use ripe, juicy watermelons. And the soft serve ice cream was creamy enough to be satisfying yet not too rich, retaining the refreshing flavor of watermelon. Add to that the flavor of the sea salt which provides an unexpectedly delightful accent, and you most certainly have a winning combination!
▼ It didn’t take us long to eat our way through the cold, sweet treat!
We’re also delighted that Dominique Ansel Bakery Japan has brought back the Crème de la Corn soft serve ice cream served on a piece of grilled corn, which we absolutely loved last year.
▼ The Crème de la Corn, filled with the pure sweetness of corn.
Both the What-a-Melon soft serve ice cream and the Crème de la Corn are available at the Dominique Ansel Bakery Omotesando branch at a price of 1,000 yen (US$9) during the summer until the end of September. If you’re in Tokyo and need a sweet way to cool down after some sightseeing or shopping, then this is certainly an attractive and unique option to consider!
