Despite launching in Europe and North America this November, Sony’s next generation console, PlayStation 4, will not launch in its homeland until 2014, it has been revealed.

In news that will no doubt sadden millions of gamers across Japan, Sony has decided not to release its much-anticipated home console in Japan until February 22, a whole three months later than in other territories.

During its Sony Computer Entertainment Japan and Asia press conference held this afternoon, the electronics giant stated that it wanted to delay the release of the console so that it would launch with a more plentiful software lineup. The console will be priced at 39,980 yen (US$400) without the new PlayStation Eye camera, or for 43,980 yen ($440) with the camera bundled. Both packs will launch with a voucher for a digital copy of 3-D platform game Knack in the box.

Time to find a good importer, eh Japan?
