Japanese aquariums are a pretty popular destination for families during the summer break in July and August. As a part of Enoshima Aquarium’s 10th anniversary celebration, it is putting on a show called “Night Aquarium” where 3D projection mapping will make it seem like visitors have traveled to the deepest parts of the ocean.
Beginning on July 20, the special show will use the aquarium as a backdrop during the evening and project moving images of sea life around the awestruck sightseers. Although other aquariums have given visitors a rather intimate look at deep-sea creatures, this is the first time an aquarium has use this projection mapping technology and is sure to draw big crowds.
The company overseeing the project, Naked Inc., is well-known for using the technology to wow audiences. In March, their light show brought a life-size Gundam figure to life in Tokyo, and in April they shocked a huge crowd in Kawasaki by projecting a massive 60-meter Colossal Titan from the hit anime Attack on Titan onto a shopping center building.
Check out a video of “Attack on the Real” below to see an example of on of the company’s projection mapping shows.
At the aquarium, the same technology will be used to simulate the environment and creatures of the deep sea. Besides the show, there will also be a section with motion sensors where the images can interact with visitors. The aquarium says they want to “introduce the fantastic world of the deep-sea” through the experience.
Although the aquarium teased visitors with just one image from the upcoming show, Night Aquarium is already a hit with Japanese netizens who say they have already begun planning for their trip to Enoshima. Seeing how popular projection mapping shows are in Japan, the November 30 closing date seems almost too soon.
