It’s no secret that there’s a lot of overlap between hardcore anime fans and frequent convenience store customers. With so many animated series to collect and watch, how are you supposed to find the time to cook, let alone the cash for a meal out at a fancy restaurant?
So in order to draw in as many otaku with the munchies as possible, Japan’s competing convenience store chains have been partnering up with hit anime series. So while Lawson is giving away dozens of different Attack on Titan goodies, 7-Eleven is countering with just one type of prize: a gigantic Evangelion figure.
Like the limited-edition 7-Eleven Gundam model sold earlier this year, the Eva Unit 1 statue comes decked out in the chain’s red, white, and green color scheme. Where the mobile suit and Eva differ is in scale, though, since while Gundam would have looked nice perched on your desk or bookshelf, the Eva will dominate your living room thanks to its two-meter (six-foot, seven-inch) height.
▼ Squealing fangirl not included.
Amazingly, you don’t even have to buy anything to win this awesome statue. All you have to do is follow 7-Eleven’s official Twitter account and retweet the campaign announcement, or like the convenience chain on its Facebook page between now and August 11.
Isolation and loneliness and both central themes in Evangelion, so you’ll be happy to know that even if you end up winning the Unit 1 statue, you won’t be completely alone. That’s because there are actually two of them, with one each being awarded through the Twitter and Facebook entry methods.
Entrants must live in Japan, and residents of certain outlying island chains are sadly ineligible. The statue ships in pieces, and while the deliverymen will assemble it for you, they’ll need a workspace of about 7.5 square meters (80 square feet) for the process, so now might be a good time to start boxing up any loose manga or anime DVDs you’ve got strewn along the floor.
The contest rules also state that anyone under 20, the age of legal adulthood in Japan, will need a parent or guardian’s consent before the delivery can be made. Really, though, even when it’s not legally required, it’s always a good idea to make sure mom and dad are cool with the idea of redecorating the house with giant mecha.
