Travel back in time to feudal Japan with an epic new clip featuring music by the Yoshida Brothers.
It’s no surprise that Red Bull has been throwing its support behind freerunners and parkour enthusiasts recently. As one of the world’s most popular energy drinks, the slogan “Red Bull gives you wings” ties in perfectly with the high-flying stunts and gravity-defying feats displayed by these athletic individuals.
What has come as a surprise, though, is the latest video from the makers of Red Bull. Called “Jason Paul Goes Back in Time“, the clip stars 26-year-old German pro freerunner Jason Paul, who slips back in time from modern-day Tokyo to a 17th-century Japanese village, where he finds himself running from angry warriors and stealth ninja assasins, creating chaos as he travels through the traditional setting.
Take a look at the action-packed clip below:
In the video, Paul can be seen escaping from a group of irate warriors, who chase him out of their master’s house after he suddenly falls through the roof.
▼ “He’s wearing sneakers indoors! Get him!”
As he bounds over bridges and darts through alleyways to avoid capture, Paul has time to share a moment with a young boy, who gives him an origami crane.
He then comes up against a new enemy, in the form of a ninja group starring some of Japan’s best freerunners: Kenichi Sato, Zen Shimada, Yuutarou Matsukawa and Yakuwa Jumpei.
Providing the soundtrack for the video is the famous shamisen-playing duo the Yoshida Brothers. These brothers have made a name for themselves at home and abroad for their unique performances, which combine modern elements with traditional Japanese music.
The video was shot at Edo Wonderland, a cultural theme park located in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, which replicates the life and culture of Japan’s Edo period (1603-1869). With its traditional buildings and village-like atmosphere, the theme park is often used as a location for the filming of TV shows and movies.
To see the world of Edo Wonderland come to life with actors in traditional costumes, check out the behind-the-scenes video for the Red Bull shoot below.
▼ A trip to Edo Wonderland really is like stepping back in time.
The freerunning chase scenes, which play out in the midst of an authentic town setting, show warriors, courtesans, merchants and families going about their business as they would have done centuries ago.
While the German freerunner in his modern streetwear would’ve stood out back then, when you think about it, there’s really not that much difference between him and the roof-leaping ninja warriors. Next time he time travels though, he might want to think about donning a Ninjacket to better blend in with his surroundings.
