McDonald’s Japan recently announced a new line of high-class Quarter Pounders that cost nearly ten bucks. Marketed as the “Jewelry series,” they come with premium ingredients such as truffle sauce, pineapple, or chorizo and each burger will only be available for one day in Japan. The first of the series, the Quarter Pounder Gold Ring, will be served up in a special “jewelry box” on July 6. If you live in Japan, hurry on over to your nearest McDonald’s, this ultra limited edition Quarter Pounder is only available today.
- Quarter Pounder Gold Ring
Thick slabs of bacon, a hefty burger patty, and a slice of pineapple that can’t be ignored. At 1,000 yen (US$9.98) just for the burger, the price alone makes the Quarter Pounder Gold Ring a high-class snack (or at least an overpriced one). Our reporter was granted a sneak preview of McDonald’s Japan’s most expensive burger before it hit counter tops across the nation.
▼ The Quarter Pounder Gold Ring comes in a special bag and jewelry box container.
- We understand if at first you don’t even want to try this burger
There seems to be a lot of people opposed to adding pineapple to food. These people love pineapple on its own, but loath its existence when mixed with other flavors. Because of this, we can understand why someone would not even want to try the Gold Ring Quarter Pounder.
- Unlike any pineapple you’ve ever had
However, the Quarter Pounder Gold Ring comes with pineapple that is unlike any pineapple our reporter has ever tasted. Because of the pineapple, he thought it might be a burger that you either love or hate, but after his first bite that thought instantly melted away.
- It’s not so much the toppings, but the sauce that takes the supporting role
The sweetness of the pineapple is exquisite but at the same time it’s not too overpowering. That delicate sweetness from the pineapple is more like extra sauce instead of a topping, and mixes so well with the saltiness of the beef patty and bacon. But at the same time, it doesn’t overpower the other ingredients and is devoted to its supporting role in this delicious burger.
- The two meats press together and release delicious juices [editor’s note: That’s what she said]
Although the pineapple takes a supporting role, it cannot hide the attractive leading actor, the meat and meat sandwich. Because the pineapple is sandwiched by the beef patty and bacon, when you take a bite, the two meats squeeze the pineapple in the middle, releasing delicious juices. At that moment, the texture of the pineapple is transmitted through a filter of meat, transporting the eater into a state of pure bliss.
- An all around delicious burger
The appearance of the Quarter Pounder Gold Ring is really exciting. It’s a hefty burger that definitely has some weight when you pick it up and it’s definitely not tasteless. It seems like the more you eat this burger, the more the flavors swirl around in your mouth, creating a fantastic burger eating experience. It’s a wonderful burger that tiptoes between the worlds of delicate and rich.
- Ending with a cushion of cheese
The bacon, pineapple, and patty are all really thick and when you eat the burger, the deliciousness of all three are released. Because the other ingredients are so massive compared to the humble single slice of cheese, the cheese flavor gets lost a little, but it instead acts as a cushion to cradle the other ingredients.
- The only problem was the amount of BBQ sauce
There was only one aspect of the burger that troubled our reporter. According to the McDonald’s staff, the BBQ sauce serves to meld all of the ingredients together. But in truth, the sauce simply can’t be ignored if used in large quantities. Of course, there must be a recipe for the Quarter Pounder Gold Ring that indicates the correct amount of sauce, but it’s really up to whoever makes your burger. The other ingredients are flavorful enough that you don’t need a lot of sauce. If whoever prepares your burger doesn’t have a steady hand and adds too much, you’re in for a world of way too much flavor.
- It’s entertainment food
There has definitely been a lot of opposition to paying 1,000 yen (US$9.98) for a burger at McDonald’s. At that price, you could go out to a restaurant. Also, when there’s a burger selling for 100 yen (US$0.99) right next to one selling for ten times that much, it seems a little hard to splurge on the expensive burger. However, eating the Quarter Pounder Gold Ring was a very fun experience and our reporter thinks it’s something you should get excited for. To put it another way, the Gold Ring burger is “entertainment food.” If you look at it that way, 10 bucks doesn’t seem so expensive.
