Long before Gwen Stefani was inspired by the Tokyo neighborhood, Harajuku’s status as the center of Japanese fashion and pop culture had been well solidified. From strange footwear to unbearably cute cuisine, a visit to Harajuku is never dull and is a must-see for any tourist coming to Tokyo.
But the crowded streets, small shops and the language barrier might be a bit daunting for a first-time visitor. So to make that trip more worthwhile, a tourist organization is opening up a bilingual information booth in the heart of Harajuku to make sure visitors get the most out of their time in the exciting neighborhood.
The information center, which opens on December 25, is the brainchild of Moshi Moshi Nippon, an organization that wants to help people overseas “say hello (or moshi moshi) to the latest Japanese pop culture.” And being a hotspot for all things pop culture from fashion to music, Harajuku is one of the best places for international tourists to experience that part of Japanese society.
Besides giving visitors important information in English about the neighborhood, such as where to eat, what to buy and how to find their way back to the train station, visitors can also charge their smartphones, use the booth’s free Wi-Fi, or even ship their souvenirs back home. And for those wanting to get a true taste of Harajuku, a shop right outside the center sells the neighborhood’s favorite snack—crêpes.
If you’re planning a trip to Tokyo and want to check out the pop culture mecca of Harajuku, this new information booth should be a great place to start. Check out the map and further information below and be sure to let us know how it is!
