Inside a phone booth, a table, and in the shape of an old Japanese lantern, these fish tanks are some of the most unusual we’ve seen.
While still considered a rarity, phone box fish tanks can occasionally be found at outdoor art festivals or on display at modern art museums. Stumbling upon one in the back streets of an old shopping district, however, is a different matter entirely.

Twitter user @mituyasann was walking the streets of an old shopping district in Yanagi, in Yamatokōriyama City in Nara Prefecture recently, when he was surprised to see vibrant swirls of orange inside a telephone box on the side of the street. After taking a closer look, he found it was filled with scores of beautiful goldfish.

▼ Inside, like a relic from a submerged shipwreck, sits an old telephone.

▼ The handset of the phone appears to float in the water, provoking big questions like, “What’s the meaning of life?” and “Can fish really make phone calls?”

While the fish tank looks to be sitting outside an abandoned gasoline stand, it’s actually part of a coffee shop called “K-Coffee” which has been set up on the site.

The fish tank trend seems to be one that several shops in the area have pounced upon, with another cafe in the district, Ryuurakuya, setting up a number of tanks inside for customers to enjoy, including this one, inside a coffee table.

And for a stylish fish tank with a bit Japanese flair, this one sits outside Hakomoto-kan Konya, a store that specialises in indigo dyeing and objects featuring traditional Japanese goldfish designs.

If you’d like to enjoy a coffee, or perhaps a lesson in indigo-dyeing, while in the company of goldfish, Yanagi town is definitely the place to go.
