The organizers couldn’t have picked a better candidate to spearhead the catwalk.

X Japan’s leader Yoshiki stunned the world a few years back when he unveiled Yoshikimono, his own line of edgy kimonos, proving to critics that nothing is out of reach for the iconic musician.

His unorthodox spin on traditional forms has continued to impress Tokyo Fashion Week organizers, who all decided that Yoshikimono’s bold rock style would be the perfect choice for the prestigious opening spot of Japan’s top premier fashion show on October 14.

▼ The Yoshikimono collection has made regular appearances
on the show in previous years.

Rapidly gaining traction since its debut, Yoshikimono garments have been featured during the finale of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in 2015 and in the opening of Amazon Fashion Week 2016. This year’s theme focuses on international trends that will set the tone for the rest of the show.

One hallmark of Yoshikimono is that the music legend himself is always present on the catwalk with pianos or drums, rocking out sick tunes while models strut up and down. On top of a brand new collection of spring and summer pieces, what makes this year’s way different from before is that he will also be playing an unreleased new song to attendees.

Yoshiki said of the upcoming Tokyo Fashion Week:

“As I was the eldest son of a fabric shop owner, I have an affinity for all things kimono. Living abroad made me acutely aware of Japan’s traditional culture and its beauty. I hope to spread this to the rest of the world. I cannot wait to show you my collection these past three years.”

There are tons of alternate kimono fashion out there like modern streetstyle or outdoor winter wear, but very few come close to the dark, rebellious look of Yoshikimono. The king of rock has left his mark in the world of rock, and he will do so again in the world of fashion.
