Häagen-Dazs is one of the most luxurious ice creams you can find in a grocery store freezer. It doesn’t matter if you eat it as is or pile on a bunch of toppings, the dessert is always delicious. But did you know that in China, you can actually order Häagen-Dazs hot pot? How can you have cold, meltable ice cream and hot soup? We just had to send one of our reporters to check it out.
- China’s Häagen-Dazs hot pot
You can actually eat Häagen-Dazs hot pot at any of the Häagen-Dazs stores in China, kind of like a Baskin Robbins or Cold Stone Creamery. Our reporter went to a location in Shanghai where she learned that the ice cream hot pot dish has been served for several years.
- Oh, that’s why it’s called “hot pot”…
As soon as our reporter got to the Häagen-Dazs store, she ordered an ice cream hot pot. Soon after, a plate filled with ice cream, cake and fruit that had been frozen using dry ice was placed at her table. She also received hot and smooth chocolate in a separate container.
Our reporter glanced at the dishes set before her. “So you dip the fruits and stuff in the melted chocolate…Oh, it’s fondue!” she realized. “Ah ha! Fondue is just like fancy hot pot. I get the name now,” she added.
▼ It looks just like the picture!
- In this corner, weighing in at 1kg…
There was a total of nine flavors of Häagen-Dazs ice cream: strawberry, matcha, chocolate, cookies & cream, macadamia nut, passionfruit cheesecake, summer berry, mango, and raspberry sorbet. There was also strawberries, grapes, and kiwi, as well as three different types of miniature cakes. With around 1kg of sweets, the Häagen-Dazs hot pot is enough for two to three people…probably more!
- “Flavor that takes you to a place of dreams, magic, and happiness”
Our reporter wasted no time using her fork to stab a ball of ice cream and plunge it into the hot, melted chocolate. She expected the ice cream to melt instantly, but in fact, the exact opposite happened. When the super hot chocolate came in contact with the deep frozen ice cream, the chocolate hardened! It was like magic!
The set also comes with crushed nuts. If you pour them over the chocolate before it hardens, you can enjoy chocolate covered nuts and ice cream!
The fruits and cake are also frozen in the same way as the ice cream, so the chocolate also hardens when it comes in contact. Our reporter claims “it’s as if your dreams and magic and Obon festival and New Year’s Day all came together in a single flavor.”
- But it’s gotta be pricey, right?
With 1 kg of premium Häagen-Dazs ice cream, fruits, cakes, nuts, and chocolate, you must be wondering how expensive this dessert actually is. Along with two cups of coffee, the entire “meal” came out to 258 Yuan (US$42). “GAH! It’s so expensive!” our reporter gasped as she saw the bill. Glancing around at the surrounding tables, our reporter noticed that many young couples and groups of friends were huddled around their own Häagen-Dazs hot pot, having a wonderful time. “I guess it’s worth the price…” our reporter sighed happily.
