Police in Kumagaya, Saitama Prefecture, on Tuesday arrested a 19-year-old youth after he stabbed his parents at their home. The suspect’s mother later died of her wounds.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday. Fuji TV reported that the suspect, who cannot be named because he is a minor, stabbed his 50-year-old mother as she slept. His father, 56, who was sleeping in the next room, heard his wife scream and rushed in. During the struggle with his son, he received stab wounds to his neck and arm but his condition is not life-threatening, police said.

The youth’s father was able to subdue his son and call police. His mother suffered stab wounds to her chest. She was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival, police said.

The youth, who is a construction worker, has so far not given any motive for the attack, other than to say he has been thinking about killing his parents for a week, police said.
