Every area in Japan has its own local delicacies. As a long-time resident of Shizuoka Prefecture, I can tell you one of the best things my area has to offer is Hamamatsu-style gyoza, or pot stickers.
You can find all kinds of places offering up this delicious dish inside or outside the prefecture, but this is the first time we’ve ever seen it get a miniature makeover. How do these tiny dumplings measure up to the real thing? Let’s find out!
Miniature toys in Japan were originally used for play with fashion dolls like Licca-chan, the Japanese equivalent of Barbie, or in dollhouses, but have since become a popular hobby of their own. Over the past few years some fans have even gone the extra step of leaving their plastic toys behind in favor of making real, bite-sized edibles instead.
A little while back, we saw YouTube channel Miniature Spaces bring us single-grain sushi, but today they’re back with their latest video for Hamamatsu gyoza, a Hamamatsu-style Chinese favorite.
As long as you’ve got a steady hand, not to mention good eyesight, the steps are pretty straightforward:
First, cut a petite head of cabbage with a dwarf-sized kitchen knife.
Then mix with the cabbage with a small helping of ground meat and seasonings before wrapping them up in teeny-tiny pot sticker wrappers. You might need some tweezers for this bit…
Look at them—each no bigger than a fingernail!
And of course, you can’t have gyoza without a little beer…
Et voila! You’re good to go for the tiniest beer party ever.
Usually Hamamatsu gyoza is topped with bean sprouts, but I would imagine finding any that small would be a near-impossible task in such a tiny kitchen!
Just as amazed as we are? Head over to Miniature Spaces for more pint-sized cooking fun!
