
Forget hiding in boxes — it’s time for a nap!
Usually we don’t praise music that basically puts us to sleep — we tend to prefer high energy, exciting tracks that make us want to jump around or at least tap our toes along with the rhythm. But sometimes, after a long day, you just want to put on some soothing music, drink a cup of Sleepytime Tea, and pass out on the couch with Mr. Snuggles tucked under your chin.
There’s plenty of mellow music you can put on when you’re ready to pass out, but if you’re looking for something to match your love of video games, then you’ll definitely want to check out the music produced by Gentle Love.
Comprised of Norihiko Hibino, the composer responsible for numerous video game soundtracks including many in the Metal Gear Solid series, and AYAKI, a pianist who performed on the Etrian Odyssey and PersonaQ soundtracks, Gentle Love reinterprets game music as gentle tunes played on the saxophone and piano, giving the music a warm, dreamy feeling. Perfect for a case of late night insomnia!
Gentle love has released a number of albums over the last two years, the most recent being Lullabies of Mana, which sees the duo reimagining music from Secret of Mana as soothing lullabies. We have to admit, the concept seemed pretty odd at first, but the album quickly won us over and, one-by-one, we started nodding off in the office. Now we’re all in trouble with the boss, but at least we’re well rested…
Scarlet Moon Records, the label that’s released the album, has uploaded some sample to YouTube, so be sure to give these a listen and relive all your memories from Secret of Mana while you drift off to sleep. But maybe wait until you’re not operating heavy machinery…
But this isn’t Gentle Love’s first foray into the world of soothing game music — this is actually the third in the Prescription for Sleep series, and you can sample before the other two albums below.
