Be still, our beating, ramen-loving hearts.

With sliced chocolate now available in Japan, it’s time for the country to turn its attention to sandwich-izing another of the world’s great comfort foods: ramen. Answering the call of duty is Japanese baked goods company Yamazaki Bread, whose products have been greeting customers at supermarkets and convenience stores for generations.

These days Yamazaki is especially popular for its line of Lunch Pack crustless sandwich pockets, which come two to a pack. Originally, the lineup was limited to traditional sandwich fillings such as peanut butter, egg, and tuna.

Over the last couple of years, though, Yamazaki has been expanding the selection to include regional favorites such as Hokkaido croquets or Niigata pork cutlets. This month, the company is turning its attention to something really unexpected, though, with Yokohama-style ramen sandwiches!

If you’ve never had the pleasure of eating Yokohama-style ramen (or Yokohama iekei ramen, as it’s called in Japanese), you’re missing out on one of the tastiest varieties of dish, made from a hybrid pork stock/soy sauce broth often seasoned with garlic. Lunch Pack’s Yokohama ramen sandwiches were created under the supervision of popular Yokohama ramen restaurant Yoshimuraya, which always has a line of customers stretching out the door.

Inside the ramen Lunch Pack you’ll of course find noodles. Accompanying them are chunks of pork modeled after Yoshimura’s chashu slices, seasoned with a sauce that recreates the flavor of the restaurant’s signature broth.

The ramen sandwiches are priced at just 150 yen (US$1.30), and you can be sure that as soon as we find some, we’ll be eating them.
