Ash Ketchum’s latest bout with destiny went just about how you probably expected it to.
*Warning! Potential spoilers ahead!*
When the Pokémon anime first aired in 1997, audiences were introduced to the phenomenon of Pokémon as well as the main character Ash Ketchum (Satoshi in Japanese). Sporting a signature red and white cap and accompanied by his loyal Pikachu, Ash’s ultimate goal is to be the very best Pokémon Master, better than anyone else.
Everyone thought this current season would finally be his moment. For the first time ever, he advanced through the semi-finals and was battling it out for the top position in the Kalos League. His final opponent was Alain who could mega-evolve his Charizard, but Ash was able to do something even more spectacular, as he’s the only trainer who can bond with his Greninja in what is called “Bond Phenomenon”, which is similar to a mega-evolution. Those who have played or watched Pokémon will realize that Ash even had type advantage in the final battle, as Charizard is a fire-type and Greninja is a water-type.

He may have won a number of Pokemon competitions and championships, but he just can’t seem come out on top when it really matters.

While Ash has seen an impressive number of Pokémon, and if you include the movies, a number of legendary ones, he’s only caught a handful of them considering there are 726 Pokémon (before the new games are released). Our inevitable question to Ash is, what the heck are you doing?!? Perhaps he will always be destined to lose. Maybe the Pokémon anime is a gigantic life lesson about how it’s OK to lose and that the journey and the friendships are what’s important. However, with the Olympics going on, it would have been nice to see Ash finally win once. Isn’t it time Ash really was the “very best”, even if it’s only for a little bit? We will just have to wait and see if everything will finally work out for him in 2020.
