Matcha wine, sausage, and desserts also on offer at elegant restaurant in the heart of the city.
Along with shrine festivals and fireworks displays, beer gardens are a much-loved part of summer in Japan. While all-you-can-drink beer is always part of the package, each beer garden tries to do something special to stand out, whether that means offering expansive rooftop views or special themed decorations.
In the case of Green Tea Restaurant 1899, the hook is exactly what you’d expect from the name. The restaurant, located in Tokyo’s Ochanomizu neighborhood (just across the Kanda River from the Akihabara district) specializes in food and drink that makes use of Japanese green tea, and come June will be kicking off its Matcha Beer Garden campaign, offering unlimited amounts of 10 different types of beer, many of which are mixed with some of Japan’s favorite types of tea.
The unlimited beer lineup includes matcha green tea beer, matcha stout, hojicha (roasted green tea) stout, Japanese-grown black tea beer, and Japanese black tea stout. If you’re not so sure you want to spend the whole night drinking tea/beer hybrids, there’s also regular, non-tea beer and stouts, plus half-and-half on offer, as well as non-alcoholic beer and matcha beer.
▼ Matcha beer
▼ Hojicha stout
If you’d like something more elegant-sounding, there’s also matcha wine, which mixes the tea with a sweet white wine base.
The all-you-can-drink plan, which also includes soft drinks, is priced at 3,000 yen (US$27) for two hours, as long as you make a reservation ahead of time through the restaurant’s website. Showing up at the door unannounced will cost you an extra 500 yen.
You can supplement the wide range of beverages by ordering (for an additional cost) items from 1899’s extensive food menu, such as green tea-infused sausages, potato salad, cake, or ice cream.
And even though the promotion is referred to as the “Matcha Beer Garden,” you can choose to sit either outside or indoors, depending on your mood or the weather.
▼ The interior design, naturally, makes use of plenty of tea-like green tones.
Green Tea Restaurant 1899’s Matcha Beer Garden promotion starts on June 1 and runs through September 30, and is available daily between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. Reservations can be made here.
