It’s not a journey, it’s Sushi, a scent developed by Demeter Fragrance Library. The scent maker is hoping to catch the freshness of Japan’s signature dish so you have it with you all day.
But does it smell like raw fish? Does it have the eye-watering aroma of wasabi? Demeter says of course not, but what it does smell like is the source of some controversy.
According to the product description it’s “the fresh scent of just cooked sticky rice and straight from the seaside seaweed, laced with hints of ginger and lemon essences.”
So it looks like the essence of fish is out but it’s a little hard to imagine what smell those remaining ingredients would produce. It seems the people who actually bought it are equally confused but generally pleased with the cologne.
It scored three and a half out of five stars overall and most reviews said the smell was accurate but strangely, all them added “vinegar” which wasn’t listed in the product description.
One person said it just smelled like licorice and didn’t care for it. Another said that it smelled of orange but that was okay for her. All in all, it seems to smell “different” from typical colognes but you probably won’t get stopped on the street by people saying “Hey you smell like Japanese food!”
You can purchase the fragrance in bottles ranging from half an ounce (15mL) for US$6 to four ounces (120mL) for $39.50. It could be an interesting change of pace and worth checking out.
Otherwise you can go back to your more conventional smells like boy’s butts and freshly printed books.
Sushi… Inevitable…
