All Star Yunomi Hi lets you step into the world of sushi.

The world of Japanese sushi is as vast as the ocean, covering specialised tools, tableware, and a whole lot of fishy vocabulary. Now, there’s a way to take a bold step into that world, quite literally, with a new pair of kicks from Converse.

Called the All Star Yunomi Hi, these unisex sneakers take the recently revamped All Star design and cover the canvas with neat rows of kanji. To the uninitiated, the kanji characters give the shoes a cool, Japanese-style look, but to sushi lovers, the layout of the characters, and what they signify, will be instantly recognisable.

In amongst the many characters, you’ll find words like 鰯 (sardine) and 鯖 (mackerel), just as you might find on the traditional yunomi that inspired the shoes.

There are a few surprises hidden amongst the fish kanji, though, because a closer look reveals stars, and the characters 全星 , which combines the kanji for “all” (“全”) with the kanji for “star” (“星”), as a nod to the Converse “All Star”.

If these shoes look familiar, you might be thinking of a similar model that Converse released last year. However, that model used the older and more familiar All Star design, which had a white sole and toe box, with white canvas uppers and patch, whereas this one takes a step in a new direction, with navy details to make the kanji pop against the darker background.

It’s a fun take on the Japanese teacup, and a cool way to show your love for sushi as you stride around town. Just as green tea helps to make sushi taste great, these kicks will add a special little something to your outfit, and they can be purchased at the Converse online store and retail stockists around Japan from 25 September, priced at 11,000 yen (US$70.54).
