With Digimon returning to the world of anime after a 15-year break, you’d think fans of the original series, which aired in 1999 and 2000, would be uniformly ecstatic. Nostalgia is a funny thing, though, and while some are glad to have the cast of kids and digital monsters back in any form, others are unhappy that the human characters look different from how they did in the original TV show.
Unless you’re a producer for the upcoming Digimon Adventure tri. movie series, though, there’s not much you can do about the onscreen visuals, except maybe sign a petition denouncing the new artwork. On the other hand, you can choose to make yourself look more like the classic Digimon cast with a pair of these goggles, modeled after lead character Taichi’s.
Available through Bandai’s Premium Bandai online shop, the goggles are designed to look just like the ones that, strangely, spend more time covering Taichi’s forehead than his eyes throughout his adventures with Agumon, his fire-breathing digital monster partner who looks like a teeny tiny Tyrannosaurus.
The Premium Bandai website makes no mention of whether or not the goggles are watertight, but they should at least keep the wind out of your eyes while bicycling. They’ll also look nice placed on the shelf next to your boxed set of Digimon Adventure DVDs, which is how we suspect most buyers will actually use them.
Preorders can be placed here for 4,860 yen (US$39) between now and September 30. Shipment is scheduled for December, so don’t get a haircut between then and now and once your goggles come you’ll look just like Taichi from the neck up.
