It’s hard to believe that our beloved, voracious powderpuff Kirby is over 20 years old now! “Born” in 1992 on the Nintendo Game Boy, the adorable little guy is actually a fully grown adult now, possibly with a driver’s license and, like, maybe even a family we don’t know about. We picture him holding down a boring office job somewhere in Tokyo, willing himself not to snap at his irritating boss and hoover him up (thus gaining his incredible powers of bureaucracy and micromanagement).
But, even though everybody’s favorite non-Jigglypuff pink ball creature is all grown up now, that doesn’t stop him from enjoying a good picnic!
A Poopoopoo picnic, to be exact.
From August 22 to September 19, boutique toy retailer Kiddyland will be hosting Kirby and (maybe) friends for a special picnic-themed event at the chain’s two largest and most prominent locations: Harajuku in Tokyo, and Umeda in Osaka.
The main draw of the “Pupupu na Picnic” (okay, we changed up the spelling a little in the title to amuse ourselves and middle school boys) will apparently be Kirby himself, who will bounce-walk into Kiddyland for special photo ops twice a day on August 29 and 30 at the Harajuku event. The photo sessions will be limited to 20 people per appearance, for a total of just 80 lucky patrons, so we presume if you really want that Kirby photo opportunity, you’ll probably need to stake out a spot in line very early or be willing to hoodwink an unsuspecting child and steal their spot.
Additionally, anyone who spends 1,500 yen (US$12) or more in the store will receive a special Kirby Pupupu na Picnic novelty sticker, plus a handful of limited edition Kirby items, such as plushes, face and hand towels, key chains, a jigsaw puzzle and – you might want to take a seat here, Kirby fans – a special Kirby clear file folder. Only one of the Kirby goods exceeds 1,000 yen retail, so Kirby superfans can get their hands on all of these limited items without breaking the bank.
It’s pretty clear based on the types of goods available, and the cutesy promotional materials, that this event is geared more towards young kids than it is to nostalgic 30-somethings or Super Smash Bros. enthusiasts, but hey, if you’re visiting or living in Tokyo with family, Kirby’s Pupupu na Picnic is a great place to introduce your younglings to this Nintendo icon.
