Every year, Sapporo throws the Snow Miku 2016 festival and rakes in over 100 million yen (about US$839,433) in revenue, with about 40 different companies participating in the promotion.
This year’s design is sporty, with Miku decked out in owl-themed gear and ready to take on the slopes. The virtual idol’s new song “Yuki Ga Tokeru Mae Ni” (“Before the Snow Melts”) by Doriko debuted last month with a preview of some of the activities planned for the festival come February.
The city of Sapporo is repurposing its trains as Snow Miku itasha trains for the event. Mikudayo, the bobble-headed, life-size Hatsune Miku, unveiled the train to the public last month.
The New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido is also giving its Sky Town shopping area a Snow Miku makeover. A life-size Snow Miku will go on display in the airport’s 360-degree screen Hokkaido Gurutto Theater, and visitors can purchase exclusive goods in the shop and themed food in the cafe. Snow Mikudayo will be there too, of course.
Shops will sell an original anniversary compilation CD titled “Stella Harmony feat. Hatsune Miku.” The CD marks the first anniversary of Snow Miku Sky Town.
The Snow Miku 2016 festival will run from February 5-11.
