A new collection of menswear based on anime characters Lupin, Zenigata, Jigen, and Goemon will soon be available at Japanese department store Isetan.
From February 3 to 8 this year, the Shinjuku (Tokyo) branch of department store Isetan will play host to a unique menswear collection that takes its cues from the popular Japanese anime Lupin III. Called “Lupinissimo in Isetan”, the collaboration marks the 130th anniversary of the store, and also celebrates the return of Lupin to television screens after a thirty-year absence. The new anime series, set in Italy and San Marino, had its world premiere in Italy in 2015 and is currently airing in Japan.
▼ Lupin wore a different coloured jacket in each of his three previous television series: green, red, and pink. For the current series, Lupin wears blue, causing it to be referred to as the “blue jacket series”.
During the February promotional period, the seventh floor exhibition area of the department store will be converted into a space designed to look like “the closet of Lupin and his crew”. Here you’ll find the new menswear collection, which is made-to-order and meticulously designed by a number of expert Japanese tailors.
Lupin’s suit features a lustrous blue jacket and a pair of slim grey trouser pants to mimic the character’s distinctive silhouette. Anime style doesn’t come cheap though, with the jacket retailing for 180,000 yen (US$1,516) and the trousers and shirt coming in at 50,000 yen and 40,000 yen respectively.
If the lustrous suit jacket is a bit too daring, they’ve also designed a double-breasted jacket in Lupin’s honour, retailing for 85,000 yen under the Tagliatore label, which gives the clothing a “made in Italy” style.
Fans of Daisuke Jigen will also be able to bring some cool character style to their everyday wear, with a dark suit that emphasises a slim silhouette using high quality, lightweight, soft fabrics. Again, you’ll need deep pockets for this one, with the suit retailing for 190,000 yen and the shirt for 40,000 yen.
One of the highlights of the collection is a men’s kimono based on the clothing worn by the character Goemon, a 13th-generation renegade samurai. Designed by Kisaburo, a young up-and-coming kimono designer, the outfit features a patterned haori (coat) and matching hakama (trouser skirt). No blade included, sadly.
▼ Haori: 110,000 yen; Kimono: 60,000 yen; Hakama: 90,000 yen; Beaded haori cord: 20,000 yen; Leather zori sandals: 82,000 yen
The most ready-to-wear style piece in the whole collection is a two-piece grey suit and knee-length trench coat based on the character of Inspector Zenigata.
▼ Coat: 260,000 yen; Suit: 330,000 yen; Shirt: 40,000 yen
In addition to the menswear range, there will also be a selection of limited-edition goods merchandise, cute cappuccinos, and a special spaghetti and meatballs dish at AGIO restaurant on the seventh floor.
Fans of Lupin will remember the famous spaghetti scene in the 1979 movie Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro, which was director Hayao Miyazaki’s first theatrical feature. The way in which the characters devour their spaghetti and meatballs at a restaurant in town makes the dish seem so delicious that it’s become one of the most memorable meals in the world of anime.
