What’s your take on the voices in the English-dubbed Your Name trailer?

A couple of weeks ago, we wrote about the new English–dubbed video trailer for the wildly popular anime movie Your Name, but now it seems not everyone is happy with the choice of voice actors. What are your thoughts? You can check out the video here:

The YouTube comments suggest a large portion of people are not too impressed with the sound of Mitsuha Miyamizu, a high-school girl living in a rural town, voiced by Stephanie Sheh, who also does the English dub for Sailor Moon. On the other hand, quite a few of the comments seem to be quite satisfied with the sound of the high-school male lead character Taki Tachibana, voiced by Michael Sinterniklaas.

Many people are arguing that Mitsuha’s voice doesn’t come across as natural. Here are a few of the top liked comments:

“The guy’s voice is great, but the girl sounds very forced, you can literally hear it’s a 30 year-old pretending to do a teenage girl voice.”
“Yeah, they need to change Mitsuha’s voice actress. Taki’s voice is great.”
“It’s not natural.”
“Really don’t like the dub, don’t get what a lot of people see when they say its good. It’s kinda cringy if anything.”
“Taki sounds great but Mitsuha sounds like an annoying little kid for me, which goes against her character.”

Your Name was released in Japan this year on August 26. It has grossed more than 15.4 billion yen (US$148 million), making it the fifth-highest earning anime film in Japan.

The movie is directed by Makoto Shinkai, who also wrote the original book with the same name. The movie tells the story of a high school girl living in the Japanese countryside who longs for a life in a big city, which results in her being transported into the body of Taki, a handsome, kind, but short-tempered schoolboy in Tokyo.

Your Name has been received with great acclaim and has made the official consideration list as a possible nominee for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. The movie has been so popular you can even buy Your Name Christmas cakes and bottles of non-alcoholic sparkling beverages. Let’s just hope the dubbed version lives up to the expectation of the original!
