Laugh, cry, sing, and scream along with everyone at all of the plot twists and turns (even though we all know what’s going to happen)!
Your Name, the hit anime movie release of 2016 that continues to break box office records in Japan and make news worldwide, is coming back to local theaters for the holidays. At 1:30 p.m. on December 23rd, Toho Cinemas is allowing audiences in Japan one last chance to get all that love for Your Name out there with a special movie screening at Shinjuku Balt 9 in Tokyo.
You can show up in costume. You can shout, cry, laugh, and make as much noise as you want as long as you’re not too distracting. What’s more, you can sing along to four songs subtitled especially for this screening. We don’t all have voices like Radwimps, but maybe we can sound halfway decent together, right?
While it’s alright to go a little crazy, don’t go too crazy. Toho Cinemas posted some warnings on the official event page in Japanese. Among the screening attendance guidelines are warnings and precautions such as:
“This screening is not recommended for those who want to watch the film in silence.”
“Cosplay is acceptable as long as your costume does not prevent others from being able to watch the film.”
“There will be no changing space available. Please refrain from changing clothes on theater grounds.”
“Please refrain from bringing noisy or flammable items such as firecrackers and flutes. If the audience becomes too disruptive, we may have to cancel the screening.”
So, basically, brave the train ride to the theater in your low-key cosplay, but leave your foghorns at home. You can save those for New Year’s.
There will also be a special talk event featuring Ryunosuke Kamiki (the voice of Taki), Mone Kamishiraishi (the voice of Mitsuha), and director Makoto Shinkai. The talks will take place right before and right after the screening. This could be your chance to see some of the masterminds behind Your Name in person!
Tickets for the screening go on sale starting at 12:00 a.m. on December 17th. It will more than likely sell out in a flash, so if you’re considering going, you’d better have your finger poised over the “Purchase Tickets” button on Saturday morning. If there are any seats left after online tickets go on sale, you can also purchase them directly at Shinjuku Balt 9.
Japanese netizens have reacted to the event with surprising hesitation. Many wonder whether or not it’s a movie that requires any vocal outbursts. And the singing? Chaos. There are just as many fans voicing their excitement and eagerness to score tickets to the event, though.
Will Your Name be able to kick Spirited Away out of its spot as the highest grossing film of all time in Japan? This event may very well help give it a push towards that goal!
