Looking for a cheap place to stay in Tokyo? This guest house will tick all your boxes.

Things can get expensive when you’re looking for a place to stay at short notice in Tokyo. But that’s where capsule hotels step in, with compact bunks and cheap deals providing travellers with a wide array of options, including good-looking anime bunkmates and beds tucked into bookshelves so you can drift off to sleep surrounded by stories.

Recently, our reporter Masami heard about a capsule hotel in Tokyo offering stays for just 1,300 yen (US$12.02), which sounded like a deal that was too good to be true. Always looking out for our readers, she decided to book herself in for a stay so she could let us all know what type of bunks and facilities guests can receive in return for just over ten bucks a night.

It was a brave endeavour, as Masami wasn’t quite sure what to expect, and she couldn’t shake the creepy images of past budget stays like this one from her mind. Thankfully, though, after checking in and making her way to the capsules, she was relived to find that Trace Guset House was bright and welcoming, and the bunks were clean and well maintained.

▼ Masami slept on the women’s-only floor of the hotel in a compact capsule that was secure and cosy.

Stepping into the bathroom area, Masami was impressed with the shared facilities. The toilets and sinks were clean and modern, and the area was equipped with hair dryers, irons, and ironing boards. Masami has visited a lot of capsule hotels in her time, and she was surprised to find this level of quality in return for just 1,300 yen.

One of the great perks about staying at Trace Guest House is the fact that the establishment comes with an attached izakaya tavern on the lower floor. Drinks were cheaply priced from 280 yen, which might lead you to down one too many, but if that’s the case, it’s an easy journey back to bed, being just a short ride up in the elevator.

The drinks menu is extensive, with wines, beers, whiskeys and sake being just some of the options available.

Having an izakaya tavern accessible from a capsule hotel by elevator is a bit of a rare find, making this one of the best places in Tokyo for a cheap dinner and stay.

And when you wake up in the morning, you’ll be able to enjoy a free cup of coffee on the 9th floor of the building.

Masami was pleasantly surprised by Trace Guest House, and highly recommends it to travellers looking for quality budget accommodation in the heart of Tokyo. While the price of a stay here fluctuates in the 1,000-yen range according to the season, she actually thought this price was too cheap, considering the hotel’s extra perks and modern facilities.

She definitely wasn’t going to suggest that the hotel raise their prices, though, especially given that there’s a lot of competition amongst other capsule hotels she’s stayed at in the capital.
