Twitter posts the highest highlight of Shibuya’s newest tourist spot: its vast and dizzying view.

Shibuya is a cultural hotspot among cultural hotspots, and one of the most hopping areas of Tokyo City. Countless movies and TV shows have borrowed its cluttered and many-routed crossing, known affectionately as the Scramble, and it’s even been used as the setting for a number of videogames.

Though Shibuya is already beloved and well-known, this year the tourism initiative is turning up the heat. An urban renewal project that started in 2014 now heralds the arrival of a brand new landmark in the Shibuya skyline: Shibuya Scramble Square, open to the public as of November 1.

“This was what I saw when I arrived in Shibuya at noon. So excited!”

You may wonder what makes Shibuya Scramble Square different to any of the other remarkable skyscraper buildings that Shibuya has to offer. Shibuya Scramble Square boasts a height of 230 meters (754.5 feet) and in fact will only offer a third of its eventual floor plan this November, with West and Central buildings scheduled to complete the trio by 2028.

Each building will be loaded with restaurants, boutiques and retailers, several of which are exclusive to Shibuya, Tokyo or the entirety of Japan. Shopaholics aren’t the only target here, though — for 2,000 yen (US$18.50) visitors may peruse the 45th, 46th and 47th skydeck observatory floors, and see Shibuya like they’ve never seen it before.

Though the building opens officially on November 1, several reporters, celebrities and a few lucky members of the public were given special sneak peeks of that incredible view.

“I tried peeking down on the Shibuya Scramble from here! Don’t tell anyone how much my legs were shaking…”

“I climbed it early!”

“Gazing out on Shibuya… This place opens on November 1! I was shocked by how high up it is.”

The observation floors are open until late, with the last call being 10:00 p.m. Ample time to catch some stunning nightscapes!

“Is this some Square-Enix game?!”

“Shibuya’s amazing night skyline looks so wonderful!”

Only time will tell how popular Shibuya Scramble Square will become, and how many people will venture to Shibuya specifically to experience its smorgasbord of delights. But that view really is something special, and you can even buy chocolates shaped like the world’s most loyal dog on your way back out.
