Recently popping up on Twitter, a supermarket ad declaring a unique event has received a lot of attention here in Japan. However, as the person who originally tweeted it comments, this advert may also be a “premonition of disaster.”
The ad reads:
________________________________________________________________________
All you can stuff into a plastic bag!
Get your fill with this super bargain event!
ALL-YOU-CAN-STUFF EGGS
From 10 a.m.
Very fun, all-you-can-stuff is always a hit. Skillfully stuff as much as you can into a plastic bag. Please come on the day – all are welcome!
Entry: 100 yen – one attempt
(first 100 customers)

As the ad says you get to take home as many eggs as you can fit into a single plastic bag for only 100 yen (US$1). We assume that the store is not liable for whatever condition the eggs are in when you are finished.
Netizens of Japan pondered ways to beat the house and get around the challenge. A common idea was to just smash as many eggs inside and then strain out the shells when you get home. Not a bad idea, except that you’d have to eat it all very quickly and plastic bags aren’t necessarily water-tight.
That would be no problem for another commenter who shared an anecdote of how when they were ill their father used to blend milk and egg shells together every day for a calcium-rich drink. Broken eggs wouldn’t matter much to them.
Another suggestion was to bring a portable stove and hard boil each egg before putting into the bag, but that probably won’t fly with the event officials.
If anyone does happen to take part in this event or any like it, the key is in preparation. Make sure you have a safe way to transport those eggs home once you leave the store. Otherwise you’ll end up with egg on your… everything.
