It’s hard to believe we’re one year shy of a decade since the live-action Death Note movies were released. Fans in Japan were treated to a live-action TV series recently, which broadcast its final episode on Sunday night, but it’s what appeared at the end of the show that’s really got everyone talking.
It’s the announcement of a new Death Note movie to be released in 2016; an exciting sequel featuring L’s successor and introducing the Six-Note Rule, which, until now, has only appeared in the original manga. What’s more, a teaser trailer has been released, giving us a taste of what to expect from the film, which will be distributed by Warner Brothers and directed by Shinsuke Sato, who was also at the helm for popular movies Library Wars and Gantz.
The new film is being touted as a “forbidden sequel” to the previous live action movies, Death Note and Death Note: The Last Name, which were both based around the central characters Light, a super-intelligent college student and L, a reclusive and brilliant detective. When Light finds a notebook, called the Death Note, which allows him to kill whomever he pleases by simply writing their name inside, he decides to rid society of criminals and L is called in to find out who is committing the unprecedented number of “murders”.
▼ L is not your ordinary detective.

Ten years on, the new storyline will revolve around cyber-terrorism attacks, and two new characters with Light and L’s DNA will emerge as their successors, ready to take on a whopping six Death Notes which have been released into the world. Attached to each Death Note is a Shinigami (death god), which means we should get to gawk at some awesome new Shinigami characters.
▼ Ryuk, one of two Shinigami to appear in the previous films. He loves apples and looks like a rock star.

To see what else is in store, check out the 30-second teaser trailer below.
The dramatic voice-over announcing, “God of a New World; The Six-Note Rule; Consommé Flavor; L’s Successor; and The Second True Kira” is enough to have us counting down the days to 2016. We can’t wait for more updates!
