Slurping noodles has never felt more wrong…
Since the dawn of the internet, people the world over have never been more than a couple of clicks away from adult content. But here in Japan, risqué content can easily bombard you in real life, too. Not only do most neighborhoods have their own local porn stores, you’ll have to make some serious detours if you want to avoid passing by the adult magazine shelves as you try to withdraw money from the convenience store ATM, or avoid people handing out tissues and flyers either promising you the hottest girls in town or asking if you’d like to be one.
Still, there’s a first time for everything, like last week when one of our reporters came across a sign advertising adult-themed udon and soba. Although we can’t say whether the idea appealed more to his rumbling stomach or his curious (and possibly dirty) mind, we do know that he wasted no time in tracking down the shop to see what exactly they were offering.

It turns out that the noodle shop, located near Kawasaki Daishi Station in Kawasaki, was running a one-day-only, Kanamara Festival special limited menu for “Adult-Only Soba & Udon”, a dish formally known as “’Fertility’ Soba & Udon”. Our reporter went for the udon, priced at 960 yen (US$8.80) before tax, and when he finally received his order, his eyes were immediately drawn to the “penis” sitting on top.
▼ “Dick in a Bowl”, the sequel to “Dick in a Box”
Phallic imagery aside, it’s a pretty typical bowl of udon, with buckwheat noodles, fish cake naruto, and two quail eggs and another long fish cake made to look like balls and shaft. (We’ll let you decide whether the shredded seaweed on top is supposed to be a bush or garnish.)
On further inspection, the wiener even had a hidden wiener instead of it. We really have to give the shop props for going all out.
But enough with the visuals… What about the taste? According to our reporter, the noodles had the perfect texture, accompanied by a savory, yet well-balanced broth. The taste, while definitely more subtle than its appearance, was still very good.
Although there’s no telling if the shop will turn this special menu item into an annual tradition or not, it’s worth checking out to see after the Kanamara Festival next year! We can only hope they’ll be back, and with a lady parts version, too.
