Duelists and anime fans drawn to the sight of 7,000-plus gleaming, mint-condition collectible cards from the hit franchise.
As the busiest train station in the world, Tokyo’s Shinjuku Station is always packed with people. Right now, though, it’s also filled with Yu-Gi-Oh! cards.
With this month’s theatrical feature Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Dark Side of Dimensions being the series’ first new animated installment since 2010, quite a few fans are no doubt feeling a wave of nostalgia. To stir up even more memories, the producers decided to set up a display of Yu-Gi-Oh! cards in the underground passageway that connects Shinjuku and Shinjuku Sanchome Stations.
And when we say Yu-Gi-Oh! cards, we mean all the Yu-Gi-Oh! cards.
▼ Arrows marking the beginning and end of the display area
Split up into two large banks of wall-mounted display cases, every single card produced for the game between February 2, 1999 and April 22, 2016 is being exhibited, with the grand total being 7,649 cards.
As one of Tokyo’s major business centers, Shinjuku is a fast-paced neighborhood in a fast-paced city. Nonetheless, plenty of people stopped to search the walls for their most reliable trump card, or to gawk at that one rare monster or spell that they never managed to get their hands on.
Speaking of rare and valuable cards, even though there’s very little crime in Japan, the entire display is under the watchful eyes of a pair of conspicuous security guards.
As such, you probably won’t have to worry about your next Yu-Gi-Oh! opponent using a card he stole from the event.
▼ We’d still keep an eye out for digital photos being passed off as actual cards, though.
