Necessary qualities: defense against cold, polite demeanor, and a fierce loyalty to Tim Hortons.
To celebrate Pokémon’s 18th anniversary of being available in Canada, as well as the upcoming release of Pokémon Sun and Moon, the official Canadian Twitter account @Canada recently asked its followers a simple question:
.@Pokemon has been around in Canada since 1998! Which Pokemon do you think is the most Canadian? #PokemonSunMoon pic.twitter.com/yfC0HHisF1
— Canada (@Canada) May 10, 2016
It’s a funny, innocent little question, but @Canada was probably not prepared for the overwhelming response it received.
It turns out people are very passionate when it comes to having a country embodied by a Pokémon. Here is a collection of some of the best responses:
▼ Of course Bidoof is a good suggestion,
seeing as the the beaver is Canada’s national animal.
▼ Oh yeah, and Stantler is a nice-
@Canada @Pokemon Stantler reminds me of an animal you'd see in one of our national parks! pic.twitter.com/W2ezCpeRhK

▼ Uh, someone else already said Bidoof. Moving on…

▼ Okay! Enough with the Bidoofs! We get it!
.@Canada @Pokemon I think it's pretty clearly Bidoof. He looks like he could be Mukmuk's cousin! pic.twitter.com/JRP8o1FmjK

▼ Hey! Delibird! It’s the same colors as the Canadian flag!
@Canada @Pokemon Delibird! It's flag-coloured, generous, and if it bumped into you it'd definitely apologize. pic.twitter.com/UXddNOABcK

▼ Or Sawsbuck because- oh no. Oh no.
.@Canada Definitely Sawsbuck. A beautiful deer that showcases the seasons? Absolutely Canadian. pic.twitter.com/bxTf4CNFd5

▼ Fine! Bidoof it is, apparently!
Oh, @Canada. And the obvious answer is Bidoof @Pokemon pic.twitter.com/sGQuliHo7k

▼ Don’t worry Oshawott, I feel your pain.

▼ Then there were a few suggestions that were a little self-deprecating.
@Canada Tauros cause it's nobody's favourite

▼ Hey! Season one was pretty cool!
.@Canada @Pokemon canada is the digimon of countries
— just me wrangel (@wrangelisland) May 10, 2016
▼ But in the end, I think this Twitter user summed it up best with all of the “Canadian” Pokémon together as one. There’s Beartic, Ursaring, Bouffalant, Sawsbuck, Gogoat, Stantler, and Seel. What a great lineup!
