Even the most hardened warrior enjoys some summer fun.
It’s no secret that Japan is full of traditions, from ceremonies and clothing to sports and games. One of these games in particular, called suikawari (literally meaning “watermelon-splitting”), makes its appearance in the hot summertime months when watermelons are in season. The rules are similar to that of piñata and blindfolded participants take turns trying to break open a watermelon placed on the ground with a wooden stick.

Now, with the summer heat in full force here in Japan, everyone is sure to have all sorts of fun, summer activities on the brain, which might have been what inspired Japanese Twitterer @KoraGonbe to have a little fun with some pictures of sword-wielding anime characters. @KoraGonbe found that by putting a simple round watermelon in front of those characters with sword in hand, ready to strike, even the most menacing warrior looks like just an over-ambitious suikawari player.
▼ “Put a watermelon in front of any sword wielder about to strike to turn them into a softie.”

▼ “This time I won’t miss, watermelon!”
Next time though, they need to play by the rules and wear a blindfold!
