Can’t get out of bed in the morning? Japan has one possible solution.
We live in an age where the ear-splitting ringing of an old-fashioned alarm clock isn’t our only choice when it comes to alarms. Some of us choose soothing music or an upbeat song to get us out of bed in the morning.
▼ So relaxing…
For others, it’s the sound of your mom cooking in the kitchen that lures you out of bed. But, what happens when you live alone? What if your mom decides not to cook that day? What happens then? What if you miss your super important meeting?!
That’s where Jikkalarm, created by the Japanese makers nanka, comes in. The name is a play on “jikka” (実家), or “home,” and alarm. A little larger than the average alarm clock, it includes a cutting board, a knife, and a mister for your morning cup of miso soup. When the alarm goes off, the knife hits the cutting board at a fast pace to mimic the sound of someone preparing breakfast.
▼ Here’s what it looks like in action:

The Jikkalarm has two settings: Mom Mode and Newlywed Mode. Mom Mode hits the cutting board at a fast and practiced past, while the Newlywed Mode is a bit clumsier, since some newlyweds aren’t accustomed to cooking yet.
According to nanka’s official site, the Jikkalarm isn’t up for sale yet. After their appearance at Maker Faire Tokyo 2016, though, you can bet it’s going to be hard to get your hands on once it does become available.
