Luffy and the Straw Hat Crew are taking over Kyoto this week, including an exhibition inside and outside the prominent Daikaku-ji Temple.
Visitors can explore the exhibition’s story through calligraphy, ink paintings, picture scrolls, and nishiki-e (polychrome woodblock prints) throughout the temple. The Nue yōkai is a prominent part of the story, and what better way to capture its overwhelmingly fearsome demeanor than by creating a giant stone mural in the temple’s garden? The 800 square meter art piece shows Luffy giving the Nue a punch in the face. Approximately 30 tons of stone was used to create the piece.
MaiDiGi TV captured the full scene using a drone to get the perfect aerial view.
The exhibition’s story tells of a Devil Fruit that arrives on the shore of Wano Country. An escaped prisoner named Tratz is walking along the beach when he comes upon the fruit. Famished, he consumes it, and the fruit changes Tratz’s appearance to that of the huge yōkai Nue.
Kyoto is holding the “One Piece 20th x KYOTO Kyoto Straw Travel Journal: Another Country of Wano” events at its landmarks from October 7-22 to entice tourists to explore the city’s history.
A “Kyōtoshiyakushomae Station Wanted Poster Section” to search for the Straw Hat Crew was established. Visitors can find Luffy at Kyōto Station, Zoro at Mibu-dera temple, Usopp at the Kyoto International Manga Museum, Sanji in Nikenchaya, Nami at the Kyoto Municipal Subway Tozai Line, Chopper at traditional confectionery Shogoin Yatabashi “nikiniki,” Robin and Franky at Nijo Castle, and Brook at Kurumazaki shrine.
Each location will have special souvenirs, posters, and other limited goods.
