Following spring cancellation of Tokyo event, artist’s new exhibition shows that the concept still has legs.
In Japan, autumn is often described as being the season of appetite, thanks to all the different types of food said to be at their most delicious in the fall. It’s also called the season of sports, since the end of summer’s blistering heat makes physical activity easier than it has been for several months.
But in the opinion of Japanese photographer Yuria, this year’s autumn is the season of thighs.
In all actuality, Yuria appreciates thighs throughout the year, having earned renown as Japan’s foremost photographer of frontal female legs above the knees. However, there’s a fall theme to Yuria’s newest exhibit, The World of Thighs Photography Autumn 2018, which is set to open as August draws to a close.
The event’s press release proudly trumpets “more than 500 photographs, and more than 1,000 legs,” with many photos falling into the categories of “sports” or “appetite.”
▼ Several of the photos seem like they’re more representative of hamstrings than thighs, but somehow we doubt attendees will complain about being misled.
Yuria has held several exhibitions before, and also been the driving force behind a collaborative thigh photography-themed cafe. However, last spring the Tokyo Ikebukuro branch of department store Marui cancelled a planned Yuria exhibition, as well as a broader event that was also going to feature Yuria’s photography. The fall exhibition’s venue, though, Nagoya’s Todays Gallery Studio, seems quite proud to be serving as host, with the event prominently featured on its website.
While some of the images have been part of previous events, a portion of the photos are being shown to the public for the first time. There will also be a gift shop selling limited-edition merchandise and prints.
▼ This photo is sure to have certain anime illustrators nodding their heads in satisfaction.
And for those looking for deeper insight into Yuria’s creative process, the artist will be in attendance on the first and last days of the exhibit.
The World of Thighs Photography Autumn 2018 opens August 31, and runs until September 24.
