This ultimate box of Japan’s highest quality wagyu beef is celebrating by opening up orders once again.
The Giga Size Tottori Wagyu Beef “Entirely for Yourself” Bento is back again, and this time with a new credential to its name. This bento, made of 4.5 kilograms (9.9 pounds) of 10 different cuts of premium Japanese beef, was created last year to commemorate Tottori Wagyu’s placement as the number one highest quality wagyu beef in the country, and retailed for a whopping 292,929 yen (approximately US$2,500).
After its release on November 29, 2017, this extravagant bento box, which was sold exclusively by internet food delivery company Gochikuru, got enormous attention worldwide, and was picked up by news sources and spread by social networks across the world. In fact the box became so popular that multiple Japanese YouTubers even uploaded videos of themselves testing out the delicious food.
▼ Watch only if you want to be tortured by heavy salivation and sudden, intense hunger pangs.
Since it got so much attention, Guinness World Records also picked it up, and this year it was awarded the title of the “Most expensive bento (meal in a box)”. We’re not sure if that’s really a goal to aspire to, but getting a Guinness World Record for anything is a remarkable accomplishment, and so we congratulate Gochikuru and Tottori Wagyu.
To celebrate their achievement, Gochikuru has decided that the box, which was previously only available for a few months at the beginning of the year, will now be available for purchase year-round. Orders reopened at 11 a.m. on November 29 (11/29), which happens to be “delicious meat day”, since the two ones in 11 could be pronounced “ii”, which is the Japanese word for “good”, and 29 is “ni” (2) and “ku” (9), “niku”, or “meat.”
▼ Obviously, this bento is not only chock-full of delicious meat, but also delightful puns, so buying it is a win-win.
If you are just dying to try it, you can order it from Gochikuru’s online shop for the same price of 292,929 yen, which, by the way, is also a Japanese pun that translates to “Meat meat meat”. But make sure you order it two weeks ahead of time, as that’s how long it takes for preparation and delivery. Sadly, though, likely owing to the logistics of shipping a 10-pound box of meat, this bento is only available to residents of the Tokyo area, so plan to make a trip to Tokyo if you want to taste test this puppy.
Unfortunately, not everyone will be able to try it even if it’s available year round. If you’re like us and not part of the one percent, and as such can’t afford to drop almost 300,000 yen on lunch, there are other ways to feel fancy. Why not order a truffle, chicken, and egg rice bowl from your local fast food joint instead?
