Korea’s chart-topping boyband BIGBANG has been cited in Korean high school music textbooks as an example of plagiarism.

The above image was taken by a second year high school student moments after she received the book. She then uploaded it to Twitter where it has since shocked many Korean Internet users.

In the picture, it can be seen that BIGBANG’s group leader G-DRAGON has been used as an example of plagiarism. The musical notation of G-DRAGON’s 2009 release, “Butterfly”, and OASIS’s 1995 release, “She’s Electric”, were printed together for comparison to show the similarities in the melody and rhythm of the two songs.

Although “Butterfly” did raise issues four years ago during its initial release, nobody would have imagined it would ever be cited in a textbook in this way. Besides G-DRAGON, the book also mentioned other plagiarism examples involving Korean rock band CNBLUE, and singer VIBE.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard about such scandals, but it seems that plagiarism controversies will not cease to continue in the K-pop industry.
