Daisuke Amaya, the creator of critically acclaimed platform adventure game Dōkutsu Monogatari (Cave Story in the west) announced on Saturday at the Kyoto-held indie developer event BitSummit that his new game Gero Blaster would be arriving this May.
The tale of Kaeru (lit. frog) on his quest to rescue his girlfriend, Gero Blaster (with “gero” being the word for the sound a frog makes) is a 2-D platform shooter that harkens back to 80s-era favourites, putting fast-paced gameplay before pretty visuals and effects. Although Cave Story appeared only on PC during its initial release in 2004, Studio Pixel announced at the game developer event that Gero Blaster would be heading straight to iOS.

Here’s the trailer for the new game:
Stood next to most big budget video games, Gero Blaster admittedly looks a little rough around the edges. But beauty is only skin deep, and the title, like Cave Story before it, promises to tap into old-school gameplay themes and mechanics to create an enchanting and memorable experience. And, come on, who wouldn’t want to play as a gun-toting frog out to rescue his feline girlfriend!?
We’ll leave you with some gameplay footage from Cave Story, which is available on everything from PC to 3DS now and is still, frankly, wonderful.
