You know you’re pretty famous when you have your own Wikipedia page. Sure, some people just take the shortcut of writing their own Wiki and acting like they’re a big deal (I’m looking at you, weird Dungeons and Dragons extra with suspiciously specific and in-depth Wikipedia entry), but when other people write a page all about you of their own accord, you kind of know you’re a big deal.
That’s what happened with Paraguayan model and actress Larissa Riquelme when, in 2010, a photographer caught her celebrating a Paraguay team goal at the 2010 South Africa World Cup and the globe collectively paused, sucked in their breath, and shifted awkwardly in their chairs.
While a lot of folks probably thought Riquelme was just getting her 15 minutes in the limelight, it turns out she’s proven a lasting fixture. In fact, so many people were permanently captivated by Riquelme that she’s apparently received over 1,000 marriage proposals since her most famous photo went online. Around 80% of those proposals are reportedly from South Korean fans, although Chinese, Paraguayan, Brazilian, American and Canadian suitors also entered the race.
Aside from the now-famous photo, Riquelme’s promise to run naked through the streets if Paraguay won the last World Cup also helped rocket her to fame – and it doesn’t hurt that she made good on that promise even though Paraguay failed to take the win. Gotta admire that kind of dedication to your team, after all.
The world may never know why the lion’s share of potential suitors are hailing from Korea, but we can’t say we blame them.
